when the world wakes up

Written August, 2021

Tab G/em (C/am, capo 7)

when the world wakes up,
I’d like to hug a stranger on the street,
I’d ask first, if it’s ok, might even kiss their cheek
now, when we’re afraid to spread a dangerous disease,
it’d be nice to hug a stranger on the street..

when the world wakes up,
I’d like to dance in a jam-packed little club,
with people wall-to-wall, all getting down and cutting up,
now, when it’s a risk to get that close to anyone,
I dream of dancing in a jam-packed club..
so we wait for everything to open,
quietly we’re hopin’ we’ll wake up from a dream,
and we pray when we’re finally back together,
we’ll take simple pleasure in our old activities..

when the world wakes up,
I’d like to sing a gospel song in church,
crowded in the pews, with all 4 parts on every verse,
when breathing the same air can turn a blessing to a curse,
we all could use a gospel song in church,
so we wait for everything to open,
quietly we’re hopin’ we’ll wake up from a dream,
and we pray when we’re finally back together
we’ll find we’ve come to treasure all our old activities
I’d like to cut a rug again,
I’d like to sing a gospel hymn,
I’d like to hug a newfound friend
when the world wakes up…
