on your birthday

December, 2014

sometimes I wonder where you are,
sometimes I wonder who you’re with,
sometimes I wear it like a scar,
sometimes it feels more like a gift,

but on your birthday,
I remember your birthday,
so I calculate your age, and think,
“we’re older than we were, and it’s okay..”

I used to wish I could go back
and think of better words to say,
but even if I had the knack
I don’t think anything would change,

now it’s your birthday,
are there candles on your cake?
are you having a good day?
we’re older than we were,

and on a Tuesday
I remembered your birthday,
here’s a card that they don’t make,
it says “we’re older than we were, and it’s okay…”
