quotin’ scripture

October, 1998

always easy with an answer, dodging bullets like a dancer,
self-contentment in a picture, I can hear you quotin’ scripture…
so you traveled to a far shore, you were looking for a good war,
one in which you play the victor, you came home still quotin’

chapter and verse, blessing or curse, I don’t know what’s better or worse,
just a couple of words, and we throw them around again…

such a lonely affirmation from your private congregation,
when I ask you do you miss her, you proceed to quote me

chapter and verse, blessing or curse, I don’t know what’s better or worse,
just a couple of words, and we throw them around again…

when your shadow lies before you, and you’re frozen like a statue,
if your voice falls to a whisper, will you still be quotin’ scripture?…
