after the open stage, I drove by for no good reason,
saw you through the shade as you were closing the café
I thought I’d stop and say nothing much of importance,
give you my songs to play in a little plastic case…but I don’t know you from Eve, I don’t know you at all,
don’t know you from anyone,
I just have to believe there are chances we take so we can sleep,
folks play the lottery, they’ve got worse odds than me,
and don’t know you from anyone..
I parked around the way, ripped off the cellophane,
found a pen and wrote your name, thanked you for smiling when I played,
walked back the little street just in time to see your boyfriend
light up a cigarette as you two drove away…but I don’t know you from Eve, don’t know you at all,
don’t know you from anyone,
I just have to believe there are chances we take so we can sleep,
folks play the lottery, they’ve got worse odds than me,
and I don’t know you from Eve, don’t know you at all,
don’t know you from anyone,
I just have to believe there are chances we take so we can sleep,
if it’s a lottery, I’ve seen worse odds than these
and I don’t know you from anyone…
