adjusting to the darkness

July, 2022

I’m ADJUSTING TO THE DARKNESS,
I’ve grown accustomed to the hole,
in the corner where my heart was,
I’ve set out an empty bowl
for spare change and odd suggestions,
anything to fill it up,
I’m ADJUSTING TO THE DARKNESS,
and the darkness is enough..

if you ever wish to haunt me
your ghost is welcome in my home,
I don’t care if you’ve gone chilly,
if all that’s left of you is bone,
you can sit up at my table,
I’ll make that soup you used to love,
If you meet me in the darkness,
then that darkness is enough..

somewhere up there in night sky,
there’s a moon behind the clouds,
but she doesn’t try to dodge them,
she’s content to wait them out,
I wish my mind could be that settled
I grow frantic in my fear,
I’m ADJUSTING TO THE DARKNESS,
but I wish that you were here
there’s a moon up in the night sky,
you can see her when it’s clear
I’m ADJUSTING TO THE DARKNESS...

ADJUSTING TO THE DARKNESS is a "song game" group prompt, sent out by Matt the Electrician on 7/16/2022.

Inspired by/ideas from poems by Gabrielle Calvocoressi (verse 2: "Miss you. Would like to take a walk with you."), and Courtney Peppernell (verse 3: "The way the moon") (Gabrielle & Courtney--you're welcome to co-writes on this one, if you wish?)
