candy bar

July, 2021

my mother used to say to me:
“sometimes you need quick energy,”
so in the glove box of her car
she kept a secret CANDY BAR,

the things you want, but you don’t need
turn into secrets you can’t keep,
sugar’s easy, love is hard,
I think I’ll have a CANDY BAR..

I fell hard for someone sweet,
I thought she’d make my life complete,
I handed her my broken heart,
she gave me back a candy bar,

the stuff you crave when you can’t sleep,
becomes a place that you can’t leave,
sugar’s close when love is far,
I could use a CANDY BAR..

you ate some chocolate I had stashed,
the one with hazelnuts, my friend brought back from France,
and I wondered why you didn’t ask?
but I think you just felt sad..

back before my bike-wreck scars
I dreamed of shiny candy bars,
I’m still trying to shake free,
older than I used to be,

that gnawing hunger, way down deep,
may grow till it’s too big to feed,
sugar burns when love goes dark,
I think I’ve earned a CANDY BAR,
sugar’s near when love is far,
sugar’s cheap when lovers aren’t,
sugar’s easy, love is hard,
I think I’ll have a CANDY BAR,
I think I’ll have a CANDY BAR,
a CANDY BAR, CANDY BAR
